In this course, students will examine and describe the eight principles of surgical aseptic technique and identify the correct tools necessary to successfully complete a surgical procedure. By the end of the course, students will be able to successfully explain the proper method of scrubbing, gowning, and gloving for surgery and sequence the steps for each; describe the properties of effective draping material and general principles used to create a sterile field; Describe common methods of wound closure and hemostasis; Differentiate among the major categories of instrumentation and the indications for their use; Describe the consequences of instrument, sharps, and soft goods (sponge) counts; and apply these learnings to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure.
